NDS Recognising Restrictive Practices workshop
National Disability Services is delivering a national series of free half-day workshops with advocacy organisations, to promote a shared understanding of the NDIS Code of Conduct.
These workshops will be interactive and help to promote conversations to develop a shared understanding of the NDIS Code of Conduct for support workers, people who use disability services, their families, advocates, advocacy organisations and service providers.
Key topics discussed at this workshop:
• Human Rights based approaches and the impact of Restrictive Practices.
• The national approach to restrictive practices - with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission's Directors of Behaviour Support.
• Available resources to support providers to meet national reporting requirements and state and territory based authorisation processes.
• Case studies will be discussed within a facilitated workshop format with topics including:
- Environmental restraints
- Duty of care vs. Dignity of risk
- Restrictive practices for children
- Understanding least restrictive practices
- Prescription of chemical restraints
• State and territory based approaches to restrictive practice authorisation.
• Local examples of good practice.
The workshops will:
• Discuss strategies on how to integrate the Code of Conduct into day to day service delivery
• Provide guidance about how to use the free resources within organisations to meet new national requirements.
• Provide opportunities for people to connect with advocacy organisations
• Discuss the role of the NDIS Commission in enforcing the Code of Conduct and receiving complaints.
